Exciting news, Windows 10 Mobile fans! Microsoft is now pushing a new version of its W10M preview, and it’s got some nice improvements.
Microsoft is now rolling out Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 10136, which is up from the previous build 10080. This new build includes “tons of fit and finish changes” that include user experience tweaks like changes to fonts, icons, and layouts; Cortana improvements like flight and package tracking and the addition of a dark theme (Microsoft says that this version if Cortana is “very close” to its final plans for the feature); better versions of the Photos and Camera apps; and easier one-handed use thanks to a feature that’ll shrink the screen down when you hold the Start button.
Also included in build 10136 are fixes for bugs found in build 10080, like the MMS bug and the small text in the People app. However, there are some issues in build 10136 that Microsoft is aware of, like duplicate tiles for apps like Search and Phone in the All Apps section.
Microsoft also notes that if you’re planning to upgrade to to build 10136 from build 10080, you’re going to need to use the Windows Phone Recovery Tool on PC to revert back to Windows Phone 8.1 first. You’ll then start up your Windows Insider app and select Insider Fast again. If you’re on build 10080 and don’t want to revert to WP8.1, you can wait for the next Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview, which Microsoft says should fix the bug that requires you to revert.
Finally, Microsoft has a warning for those of you that do update to build 10136. The company says that at the end of the upgrade process, your lock screen will appear frozen without showing the time and date for up to 10 minutes. The phone isn’t actually frozen, though: it’s actually migrating but doesn’t have a migration screen. Just leave the phone sit during this time and you’ll eventually be ready to go.
If you do decide to update to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 10136, be sure to let us know how it works for you!
