The Huawei Watch stole a lot of hearts at MWC thanks to its round face, slim bezel, and stainless steel body. Unfortunately, it might be a while before some folks can get Huawei’s Android Wear device onto their wrists.
A new report claims that Huawei has said that it may not be able to begin sales of the Huawei Watch in China until September or October. This is reportedly due to “incompatibility issues” with the Android Wear software. Google services can’t be used in China, but Android Wear relies heavily on them to work. He Gang, who heads up Huawei’s smartphone group, says that Huawei is working on the problem and optimizing its software for China.
It’s worth noting that this report specifically mentions that Huawei “will not be able to sell its smartwatch in China until September or October.” There’s no mention of whether or not this launch window applies to markets outside of China, and making this situation even muddier is the fact that Huawei never actually gave us a launch timeframe for the Watch when it was announced.
The Huawei Watch is definitely a nice-looking Android Wear smartwatch, and even if its price tag is a bit higher than other Android Wear devices, I’m betting that several folks would be interested in it because of its looks. And while a launch in September or October won’t make the Huawei Watch less attractive, such a release would put the Huawei Watch against much stiffer competition — like new watches from Motorola and Samsung — than it’d have if it released sometime this summer.
