Yesterday a report claimed that Nintendo’s upcoming NX video game console — of which little is known besides its codename — will run software based on Android. Now Nintendo has decided to pour cold water on the fire flower of that rumor.

A Nintendo spokesperson denied the rumors that the NX will run Android, straight-up telling the Wall Street Journal that “There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX.” When you give a statement like that, I guess there’s no need to say anything else.

The source of the original report that claimed that the NX will run Android said that Nintendo was doing so in order to help get developers on board with the system. That certainly makes sense, and considering how weak the third-party support for Nintendo’s current console is, it wouldn’t be tough to argue that Nintendo should use Android-based software for the NX. Google’s Android is one of the largest mobile OSes in the world and is used in a multitude of different countries.

Of course, Nintendo could just be denying this rumor because it just doesn’t want to divulge any information about the NX at this time. For now, though, it looks like the only way that Nintendo will be getting close to Android is with its upcoming smartphone games.
