DROID Turbo rumored to begin getting Android 5.1 in mid-June

DROID Turbo owners are getting frustrated that their device still hasn’t been updated to Lollipop, and Verizon’s recent limited editions aren’t helping the situation. If a new report is to be believed, though, Turbo owners may now have an idea of when their Lollipop update is arriving.

Jose Arturo, a device test engineer for Verizon Wireless, recently posted a photo of what appears to be a DROID Turbo running Android 5.1. According to Arturo, Verizon is targeting mid-June for the Turbo’s Lollipop rollout. He went on to suggest that the reason that the update is taking so long to launch is that Verizon wants to ensure its HD Voice and XLTE service work properly on new devices, and the company is constantly working with Qualcomm to patch any issues that may arrive with phones working on XLTE and transitioning between 3G and LTE.

Neither Motorola nor Verizon has said when the DROID Turbo’s update might begin rolling out or what’s taking so long for it to be released. Part of that delay, though, is that the Turbo is currently on Android 4.4 and it’s going straight to Android 5.1. Verizon and Moto decided to skip Android 5.0 because version 5.1 includes native support for VoLTE, which is a feature that Verizon wants in the Turbo. So rather than port all of their own VoLTE goodies to 5.0 only to turn around and ditch ‘em for the built-in features of 5.1, Moto and Verizon are just going straight to Android 5.1.

In addition to talking the DROID Turbo’s Android 5.1 update, Jose Arturo may have dropped a hint about two of the Moto X (3rd Gen.)’s features. In early April, Arturo put up a Google+ post that reads “Moto bringing front facing flash for selfies. And finally microSD is back. Stay tuned for summer roll outs. Excited! ” The Moto X (2nd Gen.) made its debut in late summer last year, so it’s possible that Arturo could be hinting at features that’ll be included with the third generation Moto X.
