Windows Phone 7 Series, Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 7.8, Windows Phone 8, and Windows Phone 8.1. Those are the names of the various versions of Windows Phone that we’ve had so far, and now we know what the next name will be.
Microsoft today announced the various versions of Windows 10 that it’s got planned, and in the process it revealed the official name of Windows 10 for phones. Microsoft says that “Windows 10 Mobile” is aimed at mobile touch-focused devices like smartphones and small tablets. Windows 10 Mobile supports universal apps that are in Windows 10 Home as well as a touch-optimized version of Office, Continuum for phone, and more.
There aren’t really any new Windows 10 Mobile features included in today’s announcement, but hey, it’s nice to have an official name for the next major update to Microsoft’s mobile OS. Microsoft has said that while Windows 10 for PCs is slated to launch this summer, the phone version of the OS will come later. It’s expected that the update will arrive in the fall, likely alongside two new high-end smartphones.
