UPDATE: Bad news, prospective NVIDIA SHIELD buyers. NVIDIA told Android Central that the 500GB SHIELD console was posted in error. That model is just a developer kit.
When NVIDIA took the wraps off of its SHIELD Android TV unit last month, it said that the device would come with 16GB of storage for $199.99. Sixteen gigs isn’t a lot of storage, especially when you’re talking about a gaming-focused device like the SHIELD console. Thankfully, NVIDIA appears to be prepping a second version with more storage.
NVIDIA has updated its SHIELD site with a new 500GB version of its Android TV console that’s priced at $299.99, which is $100 more than the base 16GB model. That’s about all we know about the more capacious version now, though, so we’ll have to wait to see how NVIDIA achieves that much space and when it’ll become available.
While the NVIDIA SHIELD console does have a microSD slot and a USB 3.0 port that’ll let you add your own storage, being able to just shell out $100 for a 500GB unit will be the easier way for most consumers to add more storage to their SHIELD. Here’s to hoping that the more capacious model is available on the same date as the 16GB version or shortly thereafter.
