The Snapdragon 810 is one of the top-end mobile processors currently available, and so far it’s only appeared in a handful of devices. That hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from spitting out speculation about the 810’s follow-up, though.
A new report from Re/code claims that Qualcomm is going to turn to Samsung’s manufacturing plans to have the Snapdragon 820 made. The 820 said expected to be the new top-end member of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon family of processors, and so it’ll likely be used in 2016 flagship smartphones.
Qualcomm typically has TSMC and other chip makers manufacture its processors, but Samsung is able to use 14-nanometer processes that could result in cheaper chips that have better battery life when compared to 20-nanometer chips, and so it makes sense that Qualcomm would be interested in tapping Samsung for its next major processor. Most other details on the Snapdragon 820 are still up in the air, but considering that the 810 is a 64-bit octa-core chip, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see similar specs and perhaps a GPU upgrade in the Snapdragon 820.
