Google’s Chrome OS is currently available on laptops and desktop machines, the two main form factors for computer operating systems. Now Chrome OS is making its onto a third form factor, and this is the smallest one that we’ve seen yet.
The Chromebit is a device made by ASUS and Google, and it’s basically a Chromebook on a stick. You can plug it into a TV or monitor via HDMI and you’ll have a Chrome OS computer at your display. The Chromebit has Wi-Fi connectivity to get you online, Bluetooth 4.0 for connecting peripherals, and a USB 2.0 port.
Powering the Chromebit is a Rockchip RK3288 processor with quad-core Mali 760 graphics, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage.
The Chromebit is expected go on sale this summer at a price that’s less than $100. That’s pretty cheap, and while you’re not going to be doing any heavy lifting with the Chromebit, it should be able to handle your web browsing and email with aplomb. At less than $100, the Chromebit could make for a nice little computer for travel, students, or anyone else with a display and some basic computing needs.
