Well, it’s finally happened. Nintendo is going to make mobile games.
Nintendo announced today that it’s partnering with DeNA, a company with a lot of experience in mobile gaming, including a purchase of popular smartphone game maker ngmoco. Nintendo and DeNA will work together to develop new games for smart devices that will be based on Nintendo IP. Nintendo notes that it’ll use its “iconic game characters” in these new games.
It’s worth noting that Nintendo and DeNA won’t be porting old games to mobile devices. Nintendo says that it’ll only create new, original games that are optimized for smart devices. The reason for the decision is that Nintendo wants to ensure that consumers have a quality game experience.
Nintendo is one of the biggest, most well-known gaming companies in the world, and so it’s huge news that the company is finally going to be making mobile games. It’s actually kind of surprising that it took Nintendo this long to embrace mobile since we’ve seen smartphone games blowing up in popularity in recent years. And while some folks might be bummed that iconic games like the original Super Mario Bros. won’t be ported to mobile, that’s probably a wise move on Nintendo’s part, because many of those types of games require precise controls that you just can’t get with a touchscreen.
What do you think of Nintendo’s decision to make mobile games?
