Apple has only referred to its Apple TV device as a hobby so far, but according to a new report, the Cupertino firm is planning to take its hobby a step further this fall.
Apple is planning to launch an online TV service that would include a bundle of around 25 channels, say sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal. This service would reportedly include ABC, CBS, and Fox, with plans to offer a “skinny” bundle of channels that’d include CBS, ESPN, and FX. Apple is said to be planning to charge around $30 or $40 per month for the service, with an introduction planned for June and a launch planned for September.
While this is still very much a rumor for now, it could be the next logical step for Apple to take with the Apple TV. The Cupertino firm has been steadily building Apple TV's stable of channels for years now, and recently it announced a big exclusivity deal with HBO for the channel's standalone service. Now that it's got HBO on board, Apple could continue to go for the wallets of cord cutters with a basic package of desirable channels like ESPN and FX for a price that's considerably lower than a comparable cable subscription. With an announcement rumored for June, it's likely that we'd hear more about this service at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which typically takes place in early June.
