Microsoft has put a lot of its Windows Phone focus on the entry-level market with lots of affordable devices. And while most recent phones have shipped with 1GB of RAM, some slightly older models have just 512MB of RAM. Luckily for them, that doesn’t mean that they’ll be left out of the Windows 10 update fun.
Joe Belfiore, Corporate VP of Microsoft’s OS group, has confirmed that the folks in Redmond are working on Windows 10 updates for devices with 512MB of RAM. Belfiore notes that the features that these phones get “may vary,” though, and that the timing for their updates will be variable as well.
Belier also touched a bit on the upcoming Windows 10 for phone version of the Insider Program. He says that when it first goes live, it’ll include “a subset of phones,” with more to be added later. That program is still on track to arrive in February, after Microsoft completes its internal testing.
This is exciting new for folks with affordable Windows Phone devices, as it means they won’t be excluded from Microsoft’s next major OS upgrade just because they bought a lower-end handset. It’s also good for Microsoft and its image. Of course, it remains unclear exactly which Windows 10 features they will and won’t get, but it seems likely that less performance-focused features — like the new Settings menu — will make the cut.
