Fingerprint readers have become prevalent in high-end smartphones in recent years, with flagship devices like the iPhone 6, Galaxy S5, and Galaxy Note 4 all packing the feature. Now it’s been revealed that the Nexus 6 was nearly a part of that group as well.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Dropbox COO Dennis Woodside has revealed that the Nexus 6 nearly had a fingerprint sensor in the Motorola dimple beneath its rear camera. Woodside, who previously served at CEO of Motorola, says that the dimple was supposed to house a fingerprint reader but that that idea was scrapped because Apple bought the best supplier of that component. The Cupertino firm bought mobile security company AuthenTec in mid-2012.

“So the second best supplier was the only one available to everyone else in the industry and they weren’t there yet,” Woodside explained. The exec went on to admit that even if the Nexus 6 had had a fingerprint reader, it “wouldn’t have made that big a difference.”

The Nexus 6 includes a Smart Lock feature that lets you unlock it when you’re in a Trusted Place. The addition of a fingerprint reader would allow you to quickly and easily unlock the Nexus 6 while you’re out and about as well, but if Motorola couldn’t get the part that it wanted to ensure that the reader would work reliably, then it’s probably a good thing that Moto ultimately decided to skip the feature.
