Google Groups have many uses, and one of them is to allow Android app developers to give beta access to users to test out software before releasing it to the general public. Facebook launched a beta version of its own app this way in mid-2013, and now it’s doing the same with Instagram.

Instagram announced today that it’s now got a Google Group that’ll allow anyone to try out beta versions of its Android app before they’re released to the public. Doing so will give you access to beta versions of Instagram, allowing you to try out features that are in active development and then give feedback to Instagram.

In order to join, you simply join the Instagram for Android Beta Testers group and then visit Google Play using this link to "Become a Tester". You’ll then be able to update to the beta app or install it if you don’t already have Instagram on your device. You can also leave the beta test at any time.

Getting to beta test an app is kind of exciting because it can sometimes let you use new features and designs before most other people. It’s worth noting, though, that you may also run into bugs that need to be reported to Instagram so that they can be fixed.
