When the Nexus 6 was announced in October, many criticized the phone for being too big or too expensive. The good news is that the smaller Nexus 5 has stuck around at $349, which is quite a bit less than the $649 starting price of the Nexus 6. Unfortunately, it looks like the N5 won’t be around much longer.
Google has told TechRadar that it is no longer producing the Nexus 5, adding that “once they are gone, they're gone, so we'd suggest people get them while they can.” As of this writing, both the white and red versions of the Nexus 5 have been completely removed from the Google Play store, and the black 16GB and 32GB models are out of stock.
The Nexus 6 is undeniably large, and so it was nice to see the Nexus 5 stick around after the N6’s launch so that folks that want a more normal-sized handset could get in on the Nexus fun too. Apparently Google has decided to put an end to that, though. The good news is that the Nexus 5 is still available through several other sellers, including Amazon, Swappa and more. If you want one, it’d probably be wise to hurry and get one as soon as possible, before news of the end of production drives prices up.
UPDATE: Looks like the original Google spokesperson that said that the Nexus 5 is no longer in production may have gotten some wrong information. In a statement sent to The Verge, Google says that the Nexus 5 will be available through Google Play and “select retailers” in the first quarter of 2015.
