Today is turning out to be pretty big for Google. The company announced a major update for Hangouts, the Lollipop update for Android Wear and an easy way to download Android Wear watch faces. Now it’s got some Google Cardboard news to share too.
Google revealed today that its shipped more than 500,000 units of its Cardboard virtual reality viewer. To celebrate, it’s got news for users, developers and “hardware” creators.
Google Cardboard users can now easily download Cardboard apps from the Google Play store thanks to Google’s Cardboard highlight page. Meanwhile, developers now have access to Cardboard software development kits (SDKs) for Android and Unity that contain tools that’ll simplify common VR development tasks. Finally, Google is releasing new specs for creating Cardboard “hardware” that includes specific cutting tool info, like for lasers and die-cutting.
Virtual reality is becoming a big deal thanks to the Oculus Rift and Samsung’s Gear VR, and it looks like Google is continuing to get in on the action too. While Cardboard seemed like a bit of a joke when it was first announced, these updates and SDKs show that Google is more serious about Cardboard than many originally thought.
