Data breaches have been all over the news lately as major companies like Target and Home Depot have gotten hit, losing their customers’ information in the process. Now it looks like AT&T is the next major firm to suffer a data breach.
AT&T is now alerting its customers to a data breach that took place in August and involved one of its own employees. The company revealed in a letter to the Vermont attorney general that its worker gained access to the Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers and account information of AT&T customers.
AT&T says that it has fired the employee responsible for the breach and that it’s working with law enforcement on the matter. Any unauthorized charges resulting from this breach will be taken care of, and AT&T will offer one year of credit monitoring services to those affected.
It’s never good to hear about a new data breach, especially considering the string of them that’s hit over the past year or so. And while it’s nice to hear that AT&T is offering credit monitoring services to its customers that’ve been affected by this new breach, it’s still kind of unsettling to hear that one of the company’s own employees were responsible.
UPDATE: AT&T has reached out to us with an official statement on the breach:
“We take our customers’ privacy very seriously and value the trust they have in us. Unfortunately, we recently learned that one of our employees did not follow our strict privacy rules and inappropriately obtained some customer information. This individual no longer works at AT&T and we are directly contacting the limited number of affected customers.”
AT&T hasn’t divulged exactly how many customers have been affected by the breach, saying only that the number is “limited,” but Ina Fried of Re/code has heard from sources that the number could be approximately 1,600.
