Earlier this week, T-Mobile revealed its Un-carrier 7.0 move as “Wi-Fi Un-leashed,” an effort to get as many customers as possible to route their calls and texts over Wi-Fi. Now T-Mobile’s main GSM competitor has revealed its own plans for Wi-Fi calling support.
Ralph de la Vega (shown above), who was recently appointed CEO of AT&T’s new Mobile and Business Solutions division, says that AT&T will roll out Wi-Fi calling functionality in 2015. de la Vega said that his carrier sees the feature as a compliment to its cellular network, not a replacement for it. The exec went on to say that AT&T won’t roll out Wi-Fi calling until it can be sure that customers will have a good experience that’s free of dropped calls.
It’s good to hear that AT&T is planning to roll out Wi-Fi calling support for those customers that have lackluster coverage in certain areas but don’t want to ditch AT&T completely. The big blue carrier offers a 3G MicroCell for improved coverage in your home, but this Wi-Fi calling functionality will allow consumers to have better connectivity anywhere that there’s Wi-Fi rather than just in their house.
