The Amazon Fire phone has been on store shelves for less than two months and it’s already gotten a significant price cut.
Amazon announced today that the Fire is now available on AT&T in the US for 99 cents with a two-year contract, while the 64GB model is $99.99 on-contract. The Fire originally launched on July 25 at $199.99 and $299.99 on-contract for the 32GB and 64GB models, respectively. Full retail pricing for the Fire is $449 for the 32GB model or $549 for the 64GB model.
Additionally, the Amazon Fire phone will soon make have its passport stamped for overseas travel. The Fire phone will hit O2 in the UK and Deutsche Telekom in Germany on September 30. O2 will sell the Fire for £0 upfront on the £33 plan for 2GB of data, while DT’s pricing in Germany will start at €1 with the MagentaMobil plans that start at €49.95 per month. The Fire will be exclusive to both O2 and DT in their respective countries.
So there’s your update on the Amazon Fire phone availability. Amazon isn’t saying why the Fire is getting such a major price cut in the US, but it’s possible that the handset’s sales aren’t what one would describe as “strong.” The start of international sales could add some fuel to the Fire, but adding two more countries isn’t exactly a major expansion.
