Not every phone is a hit. The news cycles are full of high-end, flagship handsets these days, and it's good to see companies seeing plenty of attention with them, but it always hasn't been that way. We may be slowing down on the sheer amount of devices that launch every single year, and that's a good thing, but the one thing we can say about the past is that there was always something launching throughout the year.

It was exciting, and sometimes you found yourself getting caught up in the new phone release. That's how I was before the iPhone launched. We had so many great devices back then -- for the time, mind you. I found myself fall in love with all of them, and using as many as I could before something new cropped up.

I guess that's still the case today, but it's certainly slowed down.

And in the mess of those phones, even after the launch of the original iPhone, there were some unfortunate releases. Devices that may have caught some of the attention before their launch, and only ended up back in the news cycle when it was more than obvious their demise had come around.

Before the iPhone, I was pretty much a huge fan of just about any Sony Ericsson device that saw the light of day. Especially the ones that used interesting designs, like the ones that spun around and what not. They were great. None of them were all that popular, though, I wouldn't call them a flop, necessarily.

So, the flops, then. How about the Microsoft KIN and KIN 2? Yeah, that's a flop. Or, what about BlackBerry's Storm . . . or even the Storm 2? I know people who loved those things! All of those things! And, I was actually okay with the KIN 2 for a couple of weeks, before I started missing things, like apps.

I was told recently that webOS was, technically, a flop. That, no matter how great it was, a series of decisions behind the scenes eventually killed it. Which, yeah, that part is obviously true because now the only way we can get webOS is on a TV. But, a flop? I don't think I'd go that far. Though, if that is the case, then . . . Yeah, I loved that flop. I still do. I'd do it all over again if I could. No regrets! If I'm invested in an ecosystem, it's still webOS. It has more than my money!

I'm not sure what made me start thinking about the KIN (or any of the aforementioned devices, really), but I started wondering how many people out there have fallen for a device, only to find its ultimately a flop in one way or another. If that happened to you, what did you ultimately switch to?
