It's been two weeks since my daughters started up this year's school stretch. They're in kindergarten and first grade, and they're both super excited about it. Of course, before I sent them off to learn a bunch of new things from awesome teachers, we had to go to a store and pick up their supplies. And let me tell you what, shopping for crayons never gets old.

But, as we were walking around and tossing things into the basket, from glue to Kleenex, and picking out colorful folders that have animated characters all over them, I couldn't help but think about the fact that soon (and it flies by way too quickly) they're going to be heading to school where they're going to need things way more advanced than a piece of paper and pencil.

And then I realize that when I was in college, it was still just paper and pencil, too. I missed using a travel friendly laptop. Or a tablet! Those would have been great "back in my day," but I can't help but think about the fact that when my girls are in college, the devices they bring with them are going to be so much better than what we're using today -- and those are some pretty awesome pieces of tech.

I can't help but be curious as to what students in high school or college right now are bringing to class.

Recently, both Beau Hamilton and Jake Christiansen posted ideas of their own regarding back-to-school, from looking at apps that are important tools while your'e working through assignments, to the devices we use them on.

In a lot of commercials I see, the focus has been on two-and-one devices, like a laptop that can swivel or fold over itself to create a tablet. I've used these devices before, and I can certainly see why many people might think it's helpful, but I'm wondering if something like this is seeing a lot of adoption for students -- when they have a choice.

Or is something like a traditional laptop (even if it has a touchscreen), and a tablet preferable? If so, if that's the combination that you plan on using, how are you going about it? Are you opting for a Windows-based PC and picking up an Android- or iOS-based tablet? Or are you going with a family, so to speak, with a Chromebook and an Android tablet? Or, a MacBook and an iPad? Or is this the reason you finally switch to a Surface Pro 3?
