Usually, September is a pretty busy month for the mobile industry. First of all, there's the IFA trade show, which will see plenty of manufacturers announcing a ton of new hardware. Most of it, if not all of it, is going to be more Android-based handsets, maybe with a small sprinkling of Windows Phone-based handsets this time around. Either way, there's a lot to look forward to.
Even before that happens, though, we're going to get announcements from Samsung (which has another announcement for IFA, just because it's Samsung and why not?) and Motorola, two companies that already have quite a few eyes trained on them at all times. Especially Motorola, which has quite the success on their hands with the Moto X and Moto G, and will unveil successors successors in early September. Oh, and they've got their Moto 360, too.
More phones! All the phones! (And smartwatches.)
I'm excited for whatever Motorola (and Samsung, and HTC, and Microsoft, and Apple and. . .) has to offer us in the form of the Moto X+1 (X2) and Moto G2, because there was a lot of great design and features to work with in their predecessors. If Motorola can improve more than they break in the next-gen device, then that's a huge win and I can't wait to see that reality come to light.
But, I'm simply more excited about Moto Maker this time around.
Of course, I can't be excited about Moto Maker without inherently being excited about the Moto X successor, because you can't really have one without the other, but on a scalable level here I'm looking forward to seeing what Motorola has ready to show off with Maker than I am with the device itself.
Mostly because there were so many customization options to Maker right from the start, and those only improved and expanded over time. There are wood options! How great is that? And while some of the pricing was still off-the-mark through the majority of the Moto X's lifespan, they had plenty of deals, and price drops along the way to make it somewhat okay.
I'm honestly looking for Motorola to have paid attention to their pricing strategy for the Moto X through Maker, and to fix it. To make it better, right out of the box. But, at the same time, to expand the customization options for consumers. To offer even more colors, and options, and more customizable parts. That's what I want to see.
More than that, it's what I'm expecting. With that realization, I understand that I'm potentially leaving myself open to quite a bit of disappointment come early September, but I'm just going to have to hope for the best.
