The NVIDIA Shield is one of the more interesting Android devices that we’ve seen recently, offering a full game controller attached to a 5-inch 720p display, a combination that resulted in one of the better Android gaming experiences around. Now it looks like Android users may soon have an even better way to game on the go, as an updated Shield may be nearing release.
A mysterious NVIDIA “P2570” wireless controller has been spotted inside the FCC's database, complete with a very Shield-like game controller form factor. The basic outline of the device suggests that the P2570 is more slender than the original Shield and could be easier to handle as well.
The P2570’s Shield-like design isn’t the only thing that hints that it could be a new Shield model. The first Shield carries the model number “P2450,” and so the P2570’s model number is close enough to suggest that they’re similar products. Additionally, we’re nearing the anniversary of the OG Shield’s launch. Many manufacturers like to follow a yearly release cycle, and if NVIDIA is the same way, then the time for a new Shield is drawing near.
Unfortunately, the FCC entry for the P2570 doesn’t contain any spec details for the device, so for now it’s unclear if this is indeed a new Shield. If it is, then it seems likely that the device will include some upgraded internals, possibly like NVIDIA’s new Tegra K1 “Super Chip” and its 192-core GPU.
