Apple’s iMessage messaging system is pretty great for those folks in the iOS ecosystem. It can save money by reducing reliance on traditional carrier texting, it can be used on Macs and iPads and it also can show when another user is typing out a message.
Things aren’t all great with iMessage, though, as the service has long been known to be a pain for users switching from an iPhone to another mobile platform. Because iMessage associates a user’s phone number with his or her iPhone, switching platforms can cause a user to not receive text messages from other iPhone users because iMessage thinks that the phone number is still attached to an iPhone. And apparently things got even worse with a recent bug that hit Apple’s servers.
In a statement given to Re/code, Apple revealed that a server glitch had rendered it unable to remove users from the iMessage service, either through the user method of turning iMessage off or through Apple’s manual removal from the system. The good news is that Apple says that it’s already addressed the problem and that it’s got another iMessage bug fix planned for an impending update:
“We recently fixed a server-side iMessage bug which was causing an issue for some users, and we have an additional bug fix in a future software update. For users still experiencing an issue, please contact AppleCare.”
Details of this update, including when it’ll launch and how it’ll address the iMessage issue, are unknown. This problem of switching from an iPhone to another platform and losing messages has been around just about as long as iMessage itself, though, so its nice to hear that Apple may finally have a fix that will make it easier for users to turn iMessage off and switch to another mobile OS if they choose.
Have you encountered this iMessage bug when switching from an iPhone to another mobile platform?
