Now that the Galaxy S5 is on store shelves, Samsung is starting to look toward the other new products that it’s got planned for 2014. A company executive recently teased two upcoming Samsung devices that are a bit different than the GS5.
Yoon Han-kil, SVP of marketing strategy at Samsung, has revealed to Reuters that his firm is targeting the end of the second quarter of 2014 for the debut of its first Tizen smartphone. Details on the device are light, but it’s said to be a fairly high-end device, while the second Tizen phone will be more of a mid-ranger that’s meant to boost Tizen growth.
This Q2 2014 launch window is the latest in a long line of targeted Tizen hardware releases. The devices have been delayed several times for various reasons, including cancellations from carriers due to “poor market conditions.” Whether or not we’ll actually see Tizen products actually arrive in Q2 remains to be seen, but hopefully Samsung can meet this target so that we can finally put Tizen to the test.
Of course, even though Samsung has put a lot of support behind Tizen, it’s bread is currently mostly buttered by Android. Yoon said that Android “still needs to be our main business,” and as such, Samsung is still planning a range of Android-powered hardware. One such upcoming product is a smartwatch. Yoon revealed that Samsung is planning to release an Android smartwatch later in 2014, but the exec failed to go into further detail about the device.
Yoon also shared some good news for folks that don’t feel like waiting for Samsung’s Android smartwatch to arrive for their jump into the wearables arena. While Samsung’s Gear devices are currently only compatible with its own Galaxy smartphones, Yoon said that Samsung eventually wants its Gears to play nicely with all Android smartphones.
