OnePlus has been busy teasing its upcoming One smartphone in recent months, claiming that the device will feature "2014 flagship specs" and a special version of CyanogenMod. The company hasn't actually shown its device or given us many concrete details about its components, but it did recently shed some light on how much its mysterious handset will cost.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau touched on the pricing of the One smartphone earlier this month, saying that it "will be priced below $500 USD unlocked and off-contract." That led to some speculation that OnePlus could pull the oldest infomercial trick in the book and price the One at $499. Lau says that that's not the case, though, announcing that the OnePlus One will "definitely be available for under $400."
Most flagship smartphones retail for $500 or $600 when purchased without a contract, so the news that the OnePlus One will be priced below $400 while offering LTE connectivity and other flagship specs definitely makes me raise an eyebrow. Of course, it might be tough for some folks to get too excited without much hard information on the One's feature set or even an image of the phone itself, but the combination of high-end specs, a sub-$400 price and special version of CyanogenMod makes the OnePlus One a handset that's at least worth keeping an eye on.
