Usually when we think of birthdays, the person having the birthday receives gifts from others. That's not how Sprint MVNO Ting is celebrating its second birthday, though, as the operator announced today that it's decided to cut its data pricing to help get us all in the birthday spirit.
Ting offers 5 different data levels that range in size from the XS 0MB tier all the way up to an XL 2001-3000MB level. The M through XL tiers have all had their data prices lowered: The M level dropped from $13 to $12, the L tier went from $24 to $19 and the XL level dropped from $42 to $29. The XL tier now has increased minutes and messaging bucket sizes, with the former growing to 2100 minutes and the latter moving up to 4800 minutes. Finally, Ting has reduced the per unit price of minutes and megabytes beyond the XL tier, cutting the minutes rate from 2 cents to 1.9 cents and the data rate from 2.25 cents per megabyte to 1.5 cents per megabyte.
Sprint MVNO Ting's plans work a bit differently than the ones offered by most other carriers. Rather than simply selecting a plan with a present amount of minutes, messages and megabytes each month, Ting customers simply use whatever they need during their billing cycle and then pay for whatever tier they end up in at the end of that cycle. Starting today those subscribers that are heavier data users will pay less for their usage once their cycle is up, and I'm betting that they'd agree that that's a pretty nice way to celebrate Ting's second birthday.
