Sprint last year launched its Direct Connect Now app for Android, giving compatible devices the ability to utilize its Direct Connect push-to-talk service. At the time of the app's launch, the Kyocera Hydro Edge was the only device that worked with the app, though Sprint did promise that additional devices would be added later on. Fast-forward to today and that's precisely what's happened, as Sprint has significantly expanded the number of Android phones that are compatible with Direct Connect Now.
According to Sprint, the Samsung Galaxy S 4, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, LG G2, LG G Flex, LG Optimus F3 and the aforementioned Kyocera Hydro Edge are all compatible with the Direct Connect Now app. The big yellow carrier plans to add even more devices in the future, including the Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini, Samsung Galaxy Mega and the Samsung Galaxy S 4 with Sprint Spark.
As I mentioned before, the Direct Connect Now app enables devices to work with Sprint's push-to-talk service, both for one-on-one calls as well as group calls with up to 21 participants. The app also supports Send Call Alerts to let other users know that you want to talk with them without interrupting them, the ability to sync with your existing contacts and support for favorite contacts. Direct Connect service is included for free with many of Sprint's plans, though there are some that require an additional $5 per month in order for Direct Connect service to be added.
Push-to-talk is a service that generally appeals to business customers that need to communicate with their co-workers in a quick manner. It's good to see Sprint expand support for its Direct Connect Now app to more Android phones, especially flagship products like the Galaxy S 4 and G2, even though it's not a feature that most consumers are clamoring for. There is an increasing number of workers using their own smartphones for work, and expanding support for Direct Connect Now means that more people can use their devices with their jobs and that people with phones supplied by their jobs have access to a wider range of products.
