Always thought that Sony's 6.44-inch Xperia Z Ultra would make a better Wi-Fi-only tablet companion to your smartphone than it would your dedicated handset? Well now Sony is going to give you that option.
Sony today announced a Wi-Fi-only version of the Xperia Z Ultra, an Android 4.2-powered device that was originally introduced in smartphone form last June. This Wi-Fi-only Xperia Z Ultra (SGP412JP) features a spec sheet that's similar to its cellular-enabled sibling, including that gigantic 6.44-inch 1080p display, 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 32GB of built-in storage that can be expanded with a microSD card. The Wi-Fi-only Z Ultra also retains the original unit's 8.1-megapixel rear and 2.2-megapixel front cameras as well as its waterproof casing.
The phone/tablet hybrid category has exploded in popularity recently, with manufacturers releasing phones that continually get larger and blur the lines between "phone" and "tablet." Sony's Xperia Z Ultra is still one of the largest handsets that we've seen to date, and while its 6.44-inch display may be too large for some to carry around as their primary smartphone, it also helps to make the device a super portable tablet. That's why it's good to see Sony introduce a Wi-Fi-only version of the Xperia Z Ultra, transforming the handset into a small tablet that could make for a lightweight, easy-to-carry smartphone companion.
Sony says that the Wi-Fi-only Xperia Z Ultra will launch in Japan on Jan. 24 at a price of 52,000 yen ($499 USD). There's no word on whether or not the device will ever arrive on store shelves outside of Japan, but here's to hoping that Sony takes advantage of its lack of cellular connectivity and makes it some travel plans in the near future.
