CES 2014 doesn't officially kick off until next week, but apparently Samsung just could wait any longer to tell us about its new Galaxy Camera. Known as the Galaxy Camera 2, the new Android-powered shooter is the direct successor to the original point-and-shoot that Samsung introduced in August 2012.
The new Galaxy Camera 2 features a 16.3-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and 21x optical zoom lens, just like its predecessor, as well as a 4.8-inch HD Super Clear Touch LCD display on its backside. In addition to capturing still photos, the Galaxy Camera 2 can record 1080p video and also includes a Multi Motion Video feature that enables users to set the speed at which their video is recorded.
Diving into the Galaxy Camera 2's body, which Samsung describes as having a "lightweight retro design," we're greeted by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 8GB built-in storage, a microSD card slot and 2GB RAM. A 2000mAh battery provides the juice for all those parts. Wireless connectivity options include 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Rounding out the Galaxy Camera 2's spec sheet is a TouchWiz-ified version of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, complete with custom features like Tag & Go, which allows the user to quickly share photos with other devices over NFC.
Overall the Galaxy Camera 2 looks like a pretty modest update to the original Galaxy Camera. The new model's refreshed design is a welcome change, though, as is the slight bump in processor clock speed and battery size. Samsung isn't talking pricing and availability for its Galaxy Camera 2 quite yet, but with CES 2014 going down next week, it may not be long before the company opens up a bit more.
