Back in March, we saw T-Mobile kick off phase one of its switch to an "UNcarrier" identity by rolling out new Simple Choice plans across its website and stores. Because of the way that the new no contract plans work, though, T-Mobile kept its traditional contract Classic plans available at national retailers like Best Buy and Walmart. It looks like that'll finally be changing in the near future, as a newly-leaked T-Mobile document has revealed that Classic plans will soon be retired.

An image posted by our pals at TmoNews shows that on Nov. 1, T-Mobile plans to kill off its Classic rate plans and stop offering subsidized hardware at national retailers. The first step of that change is actually taking place today, as the doc mentions that retailers have been instructed to start sending back their postpaid T-Mobile products on Sept. 30. Device exchanges performed within the 30-day return window will be handled by retail and branded T-Mobile locations unless its a buyer's remorse exchange, which will be completed by the national retailer at which the hardware was originally bought.

So what does T-Mobile have planned to replace these Classic plans? Unfortunately for us, that's still a mystery for now. T-Mobile is expected to roll out the third phase of its UNcarrier plan sometime before the end of October, and so it seems likely that whatever it's got planned for its national retailer partners will play a part in that announcement.

The retirement of these Classic plans is a pretty big deal for Magenta, and considering what T-Mo's UNcarrier rollout has consisted of so far (JUMP!, 4G LTE, iPhone and more), it'll be interesting to see what the operator's got planned next.
