There's some good news for globetrotters on AT&T today, as the big blue carrier has announced a new agreement that will give its customers access to more Wi-Fi hotspots while abroad.
AT&T has struck a deal with Fon, a company that helps to operate a network of user-owned Wi-Fi hotspots around the globe, that will grant the customers of both companies access to one another's Wi-Fi networks. AT&T says that its subscribers now have access to "hundreds of thousands" of additional hotspots thanks to the deal, which is available to smartphones and other Wi-Fi enabled devices.
In order to take advantage of the agreement, AT&T customers will need to be signed up for either the 300MB or 800MB AT&T Data Global Add-ons, which are priced at $60 and $120 per month, respectively. Subscribers will also need to have the AT&T Wi-Fi International app for iPhone, iPad or Android. Once that criteria is met, AT&T customers are granted 1GB of Wi-Fi usage each month.
Finding an open Wi-Fi network isn't always as simple a task as it sounds, and so I'm sure that AT&T customers that travel overseas and are signed up for a global data add-on won't mind having access to hundreds of thousands of Fon hotspots thanks to this agreement. Sure, it's kind of a bummer that AT&T subscribers only get 1GB of Wi-Fi usage as part of their plan, but at least now they've got more places to use that Wi-Fi data rather than being forced to eat into their even smaller cellular data bucket.
