Nexus 4 8GB now out of stock in Google Play Store, no more inventory expected

If Google's recent Nexus 4 price cut got you thinking about picking up a cheap $199 8GB model, hopefully you made your decision prior to this evening. That's because the Google Play Store is now out of 8GB Nexus 4 inventory, and while the store page encourages shoppers to "check back soon," Google has told The Verge that the $199 Nexus 4 will not be restocked. The 16GB Nexus 4 is still available as of this writing for $249.99, with new orders expected to ship in 1-2 business days.

News of the Nexus 4's disappearance from the virtual shelves of Google Play comes just under a week after Google slashed the prices of both Nexus 4 models by $100 each. Considering that $199 is a pretty nice deal for an quad-core Android smartphone that comes unlocked and receives updates from Google, it's no surprise that the discounted 8GB Nexus 4 went quickly. It is kind of a bummer that the cheap handset is no longer available to those that couldn't pull the trigger in time for whavever reason, but the still-available $249 16GB Nexus 4 isn't a bad deal either.

With last week's price cut and now the news that no more 8GB Nexus 4 inventory is coming, it's starting to look as though LG's Nexus smartphone is beginning its ascent into the great smartphone beyond. We're also getting close to the one-year anniversary of the Nexus 4's official debut, and considering how widespread the yearly upgrade cycle is in mobile, it's certainly possible that a new Nexus phone is getting close. The Nexus 4 is still the current Nexus handset for now, though, and it'll be interesting to see how long the 16GB model stays in stock and whether or not Google will replenish inventory if it ends up selling out as well.
