Apple's iPhones have traditionally only be available in either black or white, but it looks like that could change with the iPhone 5S.
Some new images have been posted by French repair shop MacBoutic that claim to show the rear shell of a gold iPhone 5S. The top and bottom panels are missing, so we can't tell if this unit will sport a dual-LED flash like the iPhone 5S is rumored to include, and the site says that it has deliberately removed the part's Apple and iPhone logos. As Engadget notes, the photos do show that the gold color extends to the innards of the rear shell, which gives this shell ever-so-slightly better odds at being legit.
This isn't the first time that we've rumblings of a possible golden iPhone 5S have surfaced. The most recent rumor came just last night from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who Today's iPhone says has "a history of being relatively accurate." Kuo claims that Apple is indeed prepping a version of the iPhone 5S with a "golden casing" in addition to a variant with 128GB of built-in storage.
It'd definitely be kind of strange to see Apple serve up a golden iPhone after years of only offering black and white devices, but the rumblings of just such a device do seem to be growing lately. Of course, it's possible that this golden part is just a well-done fake, and the fact that its Apple and iPhone logos have been removed makes it tougher to determine whether or not this part is indeed the real deal.
The good news is that with Apple's iPhone 5S event expected to go down on Sept. 10, it won't be long before we know whether or not iPhone 5S buyers will be able to buy a version with a bit more color to it. Stay tuned.
