LG has a big "international media event" scheduled for August 7, and while the company hasn't revealed exactly what it plans to announce there, the teasers for the shindig suggest that it'll focus on the Optimus G2. Today the odds of an August 7 announcement for the G2 got even stronger, as a report from The Wall Street Journal claims that LG is indeed planning to announce a new phone in New York City next month. The publication's "people familiar with the matter" say that the new device will probably be known as the Optimus G2.

The WSJ report goes on to claim that the Optimus G2 will come to market with a 5.2-inch screen in tow. Interestingly, LG Display Co. recently announced a new full HD 1080p LCD screen that also measures 5.2 inches and has a 2.3mm bezel.

As its name suggests, the Optimus G2 is likely to be the follow-up to last year's Optimus G flagship. LG has already said that it's next Optimus G will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip, and the new device is also rumored to include a 13-megapixel rear camera with volume and sleep keys placed directly beneath the shooter. Recent image and video leaks that show the G2 have revealed that it'll sport a set of on-screen Android navigation buttons rather than the capacitive keys that are found on the original Optimus G.

While we'll have to wait until the LG Optimus G2 is officially announced and in users' hands before making any sort of final judgment, so far it's is shaping up to be a pretty respectable Android smartphone. As for which operators might carry the Optimus G2, it's rumored that Sprint plans to add the new device to its shelves, which wouldn't be a surprise since it launched the OG Optimus G last year. Good thing that we've only got three weeks left until LG finally spills all of the details on its latest flagship.
