There's some good news for T-Mobile customers in the middle portion of the U.S. this morning, as the big magenta operator has announced that it's buying some AWS spectrum in that region. T-Mobile says that it has entered into an agreement to acquire 10MHz of AWS spectrum from U.S. Cellular for a total of $308 million in cash. The spectrum covers 32 million people in 29 Mississippi Valley markets, including the cities of St. Louis, Nashville, Kansas City, Memphis, Lexington, Little Rock-North Little Rock, Birmingham, New Orleans and Louisville.
The deal between T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular is subject to review by the Federal Communications Commission and U.S. Department of Justice. T-Mobile expects the agreement to reach completion by Q4 2013.
As for how T-Mobile plans to utilize its new spectrum, the operator says that 4G LTE will be the focus. It's expected that the spectrum will be used to roll out new 4G LTE service and expand existing LTE coverage. Additional LTE coverage is always a good thing, and I'm betting that T-Mobile customers in the Mississippi Valley are excited to hear that more LTE goodness is headed their way. T-Mobile's LTE network may still be in its early stages, but Magenta is actively working to and acquire more spectrum and improve its LTE network, which is something that all T-Mo customers can get excited about.
