Ready for a heaping helping of Android distribution numbers? That's precisely what Google has served up to us this afternoon, as the company has updated its Android platform version chart with the latest stats from the two-week period ending today, June 3. As a reminder, Google changed the way that it collects these stats back in April, and it now collects data from devices when the users visit the Google Play Store.
Starting up with the latest Android dessert, it appears that Jelly Bean is closing in on Gingerbread, which has been reigning as the top version of Android for some time now. During the two-week data collection period, Android 4.1 and 4.2 was present on 33 percent of devices that access the Google Play Store, which is up from 28.4 percent in last month. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich dropped a couple of percent points to finish at 25.6 percent this time around, while Android 3.2 Honeycomb remained at 0.1 percent.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still king of the hill this month, finishing the two-week collection period with a 36.5 percent share of all devices that access the Google Play Store. Meanwhile, Android 2.2 Froyo dropped to a share of 3.2 percent, Android 2.1 Eclair dropped to 1.5 percent and Android 1.6 Donut held steady at 0.1 percent.
While the standings in these latest numbers don't really differ from last month, today's report is notable because it appears that Jelly Bean could surpass Gingerbread as the most widely used version of Android next month, likely thanks in part to sales of Android flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and HTC One. We'll have to wait until early July to see if Jelly Bean will actually be able to topple the mighty Gingerbread, but considering how many different carriers both the S 4 and One are on, it'd be surprising if JB isn't sitting pretty in the top spot soon. That's exciting news for Android and its users, especially when you remember just how long in the tooth Gingerbread is getting. So, Android folk, which portion of that green pie up there do you currently belong to?
