Some things in the world are small, just as some things in the world are big. Our friends at Samsung happen to specialize in creating big things for the world, both in the mobile industry and out. However, since we're mostly interested in all things mobile here we'll just stay focused on the "big" things Samsung has created for us in the mobile industry, such as the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S 4, and more notably the Samsung Galaxy Note and Note II. The Galaxy Note II is one of the biggest smartphones in the world with a 5.5-inch screen, but according to rumors from source SamMobile, Samsung may be about to show us exactly what the phrase "Go big or go home" actually means.

It's reported that Samsung will be creating an enormous 6.3-inch device called the "Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3", which would also feature a second, smaller device in the line called the "Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8" appropriately sized at 5.8-inches. Although rumors of a 6.3-inch device had already been discussed, it was very early on and was rumored to be the size of the next Galaxy Note III; a secondary smaller device or another name hasn't been mentioned until now.

I've brought big phones up on several occasions, but I still have to ask when reading these reports: Are we seriously doing this right now? Is this really about to happen? A phone that's a mere 0.7 inches smaller than a 7-inch tablet, come on now. I don't even see many Note II users getting excited about a phone that forces you to use two hands just to talk on the phone. In a word, a smartphone of this size could only be described as comical. I don't know how seriously I could take anybody talking on a phone this size.

I was quick to make fun of the Galaxy Note 8.0 because it was a tablet that also had a phone feature enabled in it, but the purpose of the Galaxy Note 8.0 wasn't to be used as a primary phone - it was an extra feature added in to the tablet. But this device, this "Mega"device, is supposed to be an actual phone - it's a smartphone after all, right? I'm not sure if Samsung lost sight of what a phone is supposed to do, but first and foremost I would like to think that most people would rather be able to hold their phone up to their ear with one hand instead of two. Maybe I'm behind on the times, but I think even those with big hands would struggle to comfortably hold this device up to their ear. Not to mention it doesn't sound at all pocket-friendly unless you're really into that whole 90's era MC Hammer fashion. Portability is really starting to sound limited and I think that in itself could hinder a lot of projected sales.

The Note II, while a great device, still receives a lot of controversy over the size. However, money talks and the sales of the Galaxy Note II seem to speak to Samsung in a way that says "Bigger is better!" and they're really pushing the envelope with the Galaxy Mega 6.3. Perhaps they’re not thinking in the sense that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing – like too much increase in size. Samsung is seeing how much they can get away with. Quite frankly this move worries me, but not in the sense that you might think. I mostly just don’t want other manufacturers to see it as a challenge; a challenge to see who can make the biggest, baddest smartphone on the market.

Are there going to be people interested in a 6.3-inch device? Absolutely! It's not an empty market, but I think honestly Samsung should have left it alone at the 5.8-inch variant and would have walked away pleased as punch. All the Galaxy Mega 6.3 would be doing is saying to consumers and other manufacturers, "Hey, look what we can do." You don't really need two screen sizes in between 7-inch and 5.5-inch, but if you're going to make one at least make the one closer in size to the phablet, not the tablet.
