The war between Apple and Samsung is a well-known one, with the two companies engaged in multiple lawsuits with one another in several countries. However, while the long list of lawsuits may lead some to think that everyone at Apple and Samsung are just interested in duking it out in the courtroom, Reuters claims that Apple CEO Tim Cook was initially against the idea of suing Samsung. The report explains that Cook was opposed to filing suit because of the importance of the company's parts supplier relationship with Samsung for things like processors and flash memory.
The sources go on to say that both Cook and Steve Jobs complained to Samsung's higher-up executives about the company's design, expecting that they could convince Samsung to change the look of its products. Obviously Apple's warnings didn't produce the results that it wanted, though, and the Cupertino firm ultimately filed a lawsuit against Samsung in April 2011.
Since that original suit, Apple and Samsung have traded victories in courts around the globe, with one of the biggest decisions coming late last year when a jury ruled in Apple's favor and awarded it over $1 billion in damages. Lately things seem to be going in Samsung's direction, though, with Judge Lucy Koh ruling that the company didn't willfully infringe on Apple's patents and a U.S. appeals court denying Apple's request to speed up its case. Tim Cook may have been opposed to a suit with Samsung initially, but now his company is deeply involved in a battle with the Korean manufacturer, and considering the fact that Apple and Samsung are two of the biggest companies in mobile now, it'll certainly be interesting to see how it all plays out.
