Microsoft first made the Windows Phone 7.8 update official alongside its announcement of Windows Phone 8 in June 2012, and since then owners of Windows Phone 7.x products have been wondering when they might finally receive their taste of 7.8 and all of the goodies that it'll bring. So far, Microsoft has only said that the update will start rolling out in early 2013, but tonight a new report has revealed that the first update may only be a few days away.
WPCentral claims to have gotten hold of an internal AT&T email that's pegged Wednesday, Jan. 30 as the day that the Nokia Lumia 900 will begin receiving its update to Windows Phone 7.8. The update, which was reportedly approved on Jan. 7, is said to weigh in at around 100MB and will only be made available through Microsoft's Zune software. A changelog for the update says that Lumia 900 owners can expect the 7.8 update to bring a Windows Phone 8-like Start screen with resizable Live Tiles, new accent colors, a Bing "Image of the Day" lock screen option, a tweak to make the lock screen less susceptible to accidental unlocks, and enhancements related to quality, security, APIs, and the Windows Phone Store.
While we'll have to wait until Jan. 30 before we know for sure whether or not that's the day that we'll finally see Windows Phone 7.8 begin rolling out to eager Lumia 900 owners, the fact that Microsoft recently updated its SDK with WP7.8 support and urged app developers to prepare their apps for WP7.8 could be seen as a clue that the update's arrival is imminent. As for the device choice, the Lumia 900 was one of the biggest and most hyped devices in the entire Windows Phone 7 family, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see it be the first to get treated to a Windows Phone 7.8 bump.
