Sprint may have entered into a major agreement with Japanese carrier SoftBank back in October, but it appears that the company isn't done with trying to work out some deals in 2012 quite yet. According to sources speaking to CNBC, Sprint is in "active negotiations" to acquire the remaining 49 percent of Clearwire that it doesn't own. The Wall Street Journal claims to have heard similar reports from its own tipsters. Along with gaining control of Clearwire, Sprint is reportedly also interested in the company's spectrum.
Although it's said that a deal between Sprint and Clearwire is not right around the corner, the two companies are discussing the matter, and it's believed that an agreement could be struck before 2012 is up. Of course, Sprint does have that whole SoftBank deal to worry about as well, and Hesse and Co. may try to work its Clearwire deal in such a way that it will only happen if Sprint is indeed merged with SoftBank. The Japanese operator hopes to close its Sprint agreement by March or April of 2013, around the same time that Sprint would like to complete a deal with Clearwire.
With Sprint and SoftBank having already come to terms on an agreement and Sprint in talks to acquire Clearwire, it's obvious that this is a fairly complicated situation. Still, I'm sure that Sprint and SoftBank would like the added spectrum that an acquisition of Clearwire would bring. Now we just have to wait and see if a deal can actually be made. More on this as we get it.
