Shortly after the iPhone 5 began landing in the hands of consumers in September, it was discovered that Verizon's model came unlocked out of the box and ready for use on GSM networks. More recently, the HTC DROID DNA was also found to be unlocked, and now it appears that another new Verizon handset ships with its GSM capabilities readily available. A report from WPCentral shows that the HTC Windows Phone 8X on Verizon (also known by the model number HTC6990LVW) comes unlocked. A user says that he won the Verizon 8X in a contest and, after popping a T-Mobile micro-SIM card in, was able to access the magenta carrier's network without issue.
As I noted before, both the iPhone 5 and DROID DNA also come unlocked from Verizon, so it looks like this is starting to become a bit of a trend for the big red carrier. It's also worth noting that Verizon's 8X is the only model that comes in red and is also the only version that comes with built-in wireless charging, so those things may be worth considering for folks in the market for a GSM 8X. While getting a device that's unlocked out of the box won't be a big deal to everyone, it's still a nice move from Verizon, and I'm sure that anyone that picks up one of these unlocked handsets and decides to take it overseas will appreciate the feature. Have any of you out there tried using a GSM operator's SIM card in an HTC Windows Phone 8X from Verizon?
