Good news this morning for iOS and Android users looking to get their mobile Office on, as a new report has revealed some details on Microsoft's upcoming version of its Office software for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Sources speaking to The Verge claim that Microsoft is planning to introduce Office for iOS and Android next year, with the version for Apple devices purportedly coming in late February or early March and an Android flavor expected in May. The Office Mobile apps will be free (though a Microsoft account will be necessary) and will allow for basic document viewing, including for Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Users interesting in some basic document editing will be able enable the feature with an Office 365 subscription, which will be available in-app.
Rumblings of a version of Office for non-Microsoft mobile devices have been happening for some time, and most recently a release from a Czech arm of Microsoft claimed that Office for iOS and Android is due next year. While it sounds like users will need to pony up for an Office 365 account to enable even basic document editing, there are likely many folks that can't or won't switch to a Windows Phone for Office functionality and will be willing to pay for an official Office client on their iOS or Android device.
