Yesterday Amazon caused a bit of a kerfuffle when it revealed that owners of the new Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD models would not be able to pay to disable the "Special Offers" ads that will appear on the device's lock screens. Now the retailer has done a bit of a 180, as a company spokesperson has sent out a statement saying that users will be able to remove the ads after all. Owners that want to give Amazon's Special Offers the boot from the lock screen of the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD will be able to do so for $15.
Amazon has allowed owners of its E Ink Kindles to remove the Special Offers from their devices in the past, so it's good to see the company have a change of heart and give Kindle Fire users the same option. It's worth noting that both the updated Kindle Fire as well as the Kindle Fire HD models will have the choice to opt-out, so anyone that objects to the Special Offers needn't worry about being stuck with them if they choose the $159 Kindle Fire. So now that the dust from Amazon's announcement of its new Kindle Fires have settled and we now know that users will be able to disable the ads on their lock screens, how many of you are planning on picking up one of the new tablets?
