Many Verizon customers were a bit peeved when it was revealed that the big red carrier's version of the Galaxy S III features a protected bootloader while models from other operators didn't. Unsurprisingly, the Android hacking community took it upon itself to try and unlock the Verizon Galaxy S III's bootloader, and now it appears that that's finally happened. The arrival of the bootloader unlock is thanks to a unsecure version of the bootloader that's been leaked. The tool necessary for the job is said to work "wonderfully" with Linux and OS X, but there's also a way for Windows folk to get in on the fun. A post over at xda-developers contains everything needed to unlock a Verizon Galaxy S III bootloader.
Last month, Samsung announced plans to offer a developer version of Verizon's Galaxy S III that would come with an user-unlockable bootloader. After making an appearance on Samsung's website in mid-July, though, we haven't heard anything about the device since. Now it looks like Verizon Galaxy S III owners that aren't afraid to do a little tinkering no longer need to keep an eye out for the Galaxy S III Developer Edition. As is usually the case with these types of hacks, you should only go through with it if you're comfortable with doing things like unlocking bootloaders.
