Nokia has been firmly planted in the Windows Phone camp for well over a year now, and since then the company has been focusing less on platforms like Symbian and MeeGo and pouring most of its efforts into Microsoft's mobile operating system. Nokia has already been confirmed to be launching hardware powered by Windows Phone 8, but what will the company do if the new platform fails to gain significant traction? According to Nokia chairman Risto Siilasmaa, the Finnish phone manufacturer has a contingency plan should Windows Phone 8 not succeed. However, Siilasmaa didn't elaborate on what exactly that plan might entail, instead simply saying that Nokia is confident that Windows Phone 8 will be successful. He also touched on Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, describing the new exec's method of running Nokia as "good and transparent."
Today's news of a Nokia Windows Phone contingency plan is in contrast to what one of Nokia Europe's execs was saying earlier this year, which was that Nokia had no plan B should Windows Phone fail. Whether or not we'll ever find out exactly what this contingency plan involves is a mystery (perhaps they'd take Intel CEO Paul Otellini's advice?), and I'm sure that Nokia would be perfectly happy if Windows Phone 8 succeeds and we never learn what the plan is all about.
