This morning T-Mobile announced its first quarter 2012 results, making it the last of the four major U.S. carriers to do so. In all, T-Mobile says that it added 187,000 customers in the first quarter of the year, which is a nice increase from its loss of 526,000 customers in Q4 2011 and 99,000 customers in Q1 2011. Branded net contract customer losses were 510,000 for Q1 2012, which is an improvement of 28 percent from Q4 2011. T-Mobile says that it finished out Q1 2012 with 33.4 million customers, an increase from the 33.2 million it served at the end of Q4 2011.
On the financial side of things, T-Mobile reports that its total revenues for the first quarter were $5 billion, down 2.8 percent from the previous quarter. Data revenues saw an increase for the quarter, growing 1.0 percent from Q4 2011 and 8.2 percent from Q1 2011 to finish at $1.4 billion for Q1 2012.
Finally, T-Mobile touched just a bit on its "Challenger Strategy," which includes its $4 billion network modernization effort that'll see the carrier improve its existing voice and data coverage and pave the way for LTE service to be rolled out in 2013. T-Mobile reiterated its recent accomplishments in regards to this modernization strategy, including the AWS spectrum licenses that it procured from AT&T and its agreements with Nokia Siemens and Ericsson to deploy LTE equipment at 37,000 cell sites.
