Tomorrow is the big day, isn’t it? If you watch the Internet, then you know what’s about to happen. There were even effects lingering throughout the ‘net all day today, a full day before the big thing happens. Alas, that’s about normal. While there are plenty of people out there who don’t care about what’s going to happen, there are those who do. It’s that hurry up and wait feeling, where at some point you just want it to be over with so we can all move on.
Tomorrow is the day that everyone thinks the new iPad is going to be unveiled. Whether it’s going to be called an iPad 3, or an iPad HD is the big rumor going around right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were still some folks out there who think it will be called the iPad 2S, just because they’re a rumor or two behind. Whatever it’s going to be called, the name isn’t the only rumor being tossed around.
We’ve got how thin it’s going to be. How awesome the display is going to be. If it will be an LTE-packing beast of a tablet. Or, one of my personal favorites, how many different models Apple will unveil. It’s a relative buffet of options for rumors, and you can hang onto any one of them you want all the way until the big moment. Or all of them, if you’re into that kind of thing.
It’s usual this time of year, or whatever time of year that Apple is getting ready to announce something. Apple-based rumors are nothing new to the industry, and they probably will always be around. Or, as long as Apple is busy making things that people want. And, while some people hate rumors and news sites reporting on those rumors, there’s nothing wrong with a little speculation here and there.
The problem comes when news sites start touting those rumors as fact, despite Apple (or any company, for that matter) hasn’t announced anything. Sure, there are situations where you’re looking at a leak, or a document, or whatever else and you think, There’s no way this can’t be true, and go from there. Or, you run a piece based on information provided by sources, which you have no honest reason to disbelieve. That’s all well and good. The problem comes when you don’t absolutely get across that it’s still just a rumor, and that’s all it is.
Because consumers listen to the news sites, the media, the blogs, the rumors and speculation. And once those rumors and speculation start to be preached as gospel, then that’s when the situation for Apple, and any other company, gets painted a bit darker. No, I’m not saying that if Apple releases an iPad HD/3/2S that doesn’t reach all the rumors completely it won’t sell a boatload, I’m not saying that at all. At the same time, it will stop someone out there from buying it. In fact, we already know Taylor isn’t interested in the device, and it hasn’t even been announced yet.
So with the next iPad set to be unveiled tomorrow, I can’t help but wonder if it is going to be crushed under its own rumor mill. I’m wondering how long it will take some places out there to start yelling to everyone who will listen about how the new tablet could be better, and how everyone thought it was going to be better. I’m sure it will happen. Some feature won’t be good enough for someone out there, based entirely on those rumors-spouted-as-facts, and the Internet will go crazy for a short period of time.
Or it won’t, and Apple will please everyone (haha...) and the world will keep on turning.
At least one thing is for sure, right?
