AT&T said last month that it would be flipping the switch on its 4G LTE network in New York City "very soon," but failed to go into any further details. Unfortunately for NYCers, the city didn't make the cut in AT&T's most recent LTE expansion, but if you're already in the city and own an AT&T LTE device, you may be able to give the network a test right now. Twitter user @curse76, also known as Jorge, pointed out to us last night that he was able to hop onto AT&T's LTE airwaves and pulled down speeds of around 8-10Mbps down and 0.4-1.7Mbps up, though other users have reported even faster speeds. In a statement to Phone Scoop, an AT&T spokesperson had this to say about the situation:

"It does make sense that as testing is taking place, customers may see 4G LTE in markets we have not yet launched, but we've yet to launch the network in NYC"

So we're not any closer to knowing exactly when AT&T's 4G LTE network will actually be going live in New York City, but at least we know that tests are underway. And hey, if you're in the area and own a device like the HTC Vivid or Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, you can get an early preview of AT&T's LTE network and earn the satisfaction of knowing that you were one of the first in NYC to use it. Sounds like a win-win.
