If you ask Apple, the only way to use its new Siri voice command system is to buy an iPhone 4S (which might be harder than it sounds right now). That decision hasn't totally sat well with iPhone 4 owners unwilling to upgrade just for Siri, but it appears that one developer has successfully begun to port it to the iPhone 4. Stephen Troughton-Smith and the folks at 9to5 Mac have been working together to get Siri up and running on an iPhone 4, and so far they've been able to get Siri to boot up and even recognize spoken commands. The only problem? Siri works by using the Internet and connecting to Apple's servers to carry out commands and look up information, and unsurprisingly Apple isn't authenticating the commands sent to its servers from the iPhone 4.
Overall it looks like Troughton-Smith has been able to get Siri running pretty smoothly on an iPhone 4, save for the whole authentication problem anyway, which suggests that Apple wouldn't have much of a problem porting Siri to the iPhone 4 itself. Of course, just because Apple can bring Siri to iPhone 4 owners doesn't actually mean it will, especially since the voice command system is one of the iPhone 4S's flagship features. The good news is that Troughton-Smith and 9to5 Mac are pushing forward with this hack, so iPhone 4 owners dying to have a chat with Siri may eventually be able to so long as they're willing to hack their phone.
