Earlier this month we saw Samsung add the T-Mobile Galaxy S II to its website, but the page was (and still is) missing the one piece of information that folks have been working to discover ever since the phone debuted: the type of processor found in the GSII. It seems that Samsung's own Galaxy S Support Twitter account may have just let the cat out of the bag, though, telling our friend Julian that "The Samsung #GalaxyS2 comes with a 1.5 dual core Qualcomm APQ8060 processor." The full conversation can be found below.
When the Galaxy S II variants were unveiled last month, it was announced that both the AT&T and Sprint versions were using Samsung's own 1.2GHz Exynos processor. However, the only information revealed about the T-Mobile model's processor was that it was dual-core. The device has been rumored to be packing a Qualcomm APQ8060 chip ever since it began making headlines as the Hercules, but today is the first time that either T-Mobile or Samsung have mentioned the APQ8060. As for exactly why T-Mobile's Galaxy S II uses a Qualcomm processor instead of an Exynos, well, that's still not totally clear. Reports from This is my next and Anandtech suggested that a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip may have been chosen so that it could be paired with an MDM8220 modem, giving the Galaxy S II support for T-Mobile's 42Mbps network.
There's still no word on when the T-Mobile Galaxy S II will be launching outside of a vague "this fall" window, but we'll pass along any new information as we get it.
Thanks Julian!
